Long hours, congested roads, difficult passengers – those are the struggles of this Private Hire driver. But no one could’ve predicted that one day, a sudden pandemic would affect his life and livelihood.
Overnight, his earnings drop significantly, passengers cancel their booking at the last minute, and no matter how diligent he has been in keeping his vehicle sanitised, the public shun his services. With his daughter taken ill, he worries about how he’ll support his family. Will the pandemic be over soon? Can he survive this crisis? All he knows is that he must keep going, for his family.
The challenge in creating this short film came in the form of spatial constraints – as most of the shots needed to be taken within a car, setup had to be small and mobile. With minimal lighting available and only a Sony A7RIII camera in hand, creative director Haqim Mokhtar was undeterred. As the spread of COVID-19 is driving the world into chaos, he wanted to shine a light on the plight of local Private Hire drivers. “They are regular people, with worries just like everybody else, doing their part to support the community and carrying on with their lives as normal as possible.”
